Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) has taken the victory of the 144th Il Lombardia after an attack on the last kilometres.

The second Monument of the year was 231 kilometres long between Bergamo and Como over the familiar course of the race, despite having less kilometres, but that still included the climbs that make it an iconic race.

A group of strong riders that included Remco Evenepoel (Deceuninck-Quick-Step), George Bennett (Jumbo-Visma), Vincenzo Nibali, Bauke Mollema, Giulio Ciccone (Trek-Segafredo), Aleksandr Vlasov and Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) took the front of the race and left the rest of the peloton behind. All the excitement turned into worries for a moment when Evenepoel crashed against the wall of a bridge and fell over the edge.

Later information of the media present in the race informed that the rider was conscious, and he was being taken to the hospital to undergo further checks. Meanwhile, in front, Fuglsang, Vlasov and Bennett changed the pace and left behind the rest of the escapees.

With six kilometres to go, Fuglsang launched a new attack and left Bennett behind, building a gap big enough to take a solo victory in Como. Bennett and Vlasov completed the podium of the race.

Just as he was approaching the last stretch of the race, Max Schachmann (Bora-hansgrohe) crashed against a car that entered the course of the race, but seemed to be unharmed as he returned to the bike and continued racing.
