Deceuninck-Quick-Step's Remco Evenepoel has suffered a heavy crash at Il Lombardia that has left him with several injuries.

The Belgian rider crashed on one of the descents of the Italian competition when his bike hit a wall on a bridge, and he fell over the edge. Despite the scary moments that were lived just after the crash, it was soon known that the rider was conscious and was going to be taken to the hospital.

"Unfortunately, the X-rays showed a fractured pelvis and a right lung contusion, which will keep Evenepoel – a winner of four stage races this season – on the sidelines for the upcoming period," said the team through a statement. "Our rider will remain in the hospital overnight under observation, before flying on Sunday to Belgium."

The rider was one of the favourites to win Il Lombardia as he has won all the races in which he has started in 2020: The Vuelta a San Juan, the Volta ao Algarve, the Vuelta a Burgos and the Tour de Pologne.
