La Course by le Tour de France

Trek-Segafredo's Lizzie Deignan has taken the victory at the seventh edition of La Course by Le Tour de France.

The race had a start and finish in Nice, where the Tour de France was going to start later on the day. The peloton faced a 96-kilometre course that included two climbs of the third category to the Core de Rimiez, and on the second lap World Champion Annemiek van Vleuten launched an attack on the first part of the last climb, which is already her iconic move.

Along with her, Deignan, Elisa Longo Borghini (Trek-Segafredo), Marianne Vos (CCC Liv), Demi Vollering (Parkhotel Valkenburg) and Katya Niewadoma (Canyon-SRAM) formed the front group. Despite the attempts of escaping of several of them, it all came down to a final sprint in which Vos was the first to make a strong move but was overtaken by the Briton just at the finish line.

"I was just relieved that I won it," said Deignan at the end of the day. "What a performance by Trek-Segafredo today. Every single rider played their part and me and Elisa just really had to wait for the final. Elisa did the perfect job, forced Marianne to sprint early and I took advantage of that.

"I think I had two of the best sprinters in the world in the car, Ina-Yoko Teutenberg and Giorgia Bronzini have both beaten Marianne Vos in lots of sprints so I had the best advice and their advice was 'patience' and I took it. It’s phenomenal! Sometimes when you’re training hard and things aren’t going your way it’s frustrating and finally it seems like the luck is on our side. To be part of Trek-Segafredo is the best feeling and this is a team victory."
