Deceuninck-Quick-Step's Julian Alaphilippe has taken the victory of the second stage at the Tour de France. The Frenchman also took the Yellow Jersey.

The route of the second day of competition in La Grande Boucle was 186 kilometres long with a start in Nice Haut Pays and a finish in Nice, and featured two climbs of the first category and one of the second. The escape of the day was formed within the first 20 kilometres of the stage and included riders like Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe), Matteo Trentin (CCC Team) and Toms Skujins (Trek-Segafredo).

Meanwhile, teams like UAE Team Emirates and Jumbo-Visma took control of the pace in the pack. Witgh 40 kilometres remaining all the escapees were reeled back in and the peloton rode together for some more kilometres. On the descent of the penultimate climb, Colombian Daniel Martinez (EF Pro Cycling) crashed and was left behind.

During the first ramps of the last ascension, Deceuninck-Quick-Step took control of the speed in the pack and Julian Alaphilippe attacked with 13 kilometres to go and was followed by Marc Hirschi (Sunweb). A couple of kilometres later Tom Dumoulin (Jumbo-Visma) suffered a crash, but he was able to return to the pack, while Adam Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) joined the two men in front.

The three men arrived together to the last kilometre and Alaphilippe launched a strong sprint that couldn't be matched by the others. Hirschi got close to him in the last metre, but crossed the finish line in the second position, while Yates was on the third position of the day.
