Adam Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) has surprisingly taken the Yellow Jersey at the end of the fifth stage of the Tour de France as Julian Alaphilippe received a penalty from the commissaries.
French media report that the rider of Deceuninck-Quick-Step -who has been on top of the General Classification for the last two stages- received a bidon in the last 20 kilometres and because of that has received a 20-second penalty.
At the end of the previous stage, Yates was four seconds behind the Frenchman, and the penalty puts him on top of the General Classification.
Update: Yates received the Yellow Jersey in the podium ceremony and the Tour de France organisation confirmed that Alaphilippe was sanctioned with a 20-second penalty for "an unauthorised supply pickup."
