Sunweb's Marc Hirschi has taken the victory of the 12th stage of the Tour de France, after finishing in the top three in two previous occasions of the race.

The 22-year-old is making his debut in La Grande Boucle and he had already been close to the victory, at the second stage where he finished second and on the ninth day of competition, where he was caught close to the finish line and sprinted to the podium place. But the rider could finally taste victory at the 12th stage after a strong solo effort.

"It is unbelievable because I was two times really close," the Swiss rider explained. "I never believed that I would make it because it was really doubtful and then I went full gas until the last 200 metres and it just feels super nice. I can't describe it, it's hard to find words. It's my first victory and then in the Tour so it couldn't be better, it's like a dream."

The finish of the ninth stage of the race was heartbreaking for the rider, as he was also riding solo but was caught just before getting to the finish. Hirschi wanted to take revenge for that day, but he also learned other lessons he applied today.

"For sure, but it also gave me a lot of confidence," he explained. "I think otherwise I would have never attacked on this climb solo. So I know I'm strong so it gave me confidence, then it gave me this extra power. Now or never. I can't get three times in a row on the podium only. It's just nice."
