Martin Berkhout, who represents Fabio Jakobsen and Dylan Groenewegen, has discussed the current state of both riders after the Tour de Pologne crash.

Jakobsen suffered a very heavy crash at the finish line of the first stage of the 2020 Tour de Pologne when Groenewegen made a move that sent him against the fences. Jakobsen had to be put in an artificial coma and has suffered from serious facial injuries, as he broke almost all the bones in his head, and Groenewegen didn't suffer serious physical damage, but he's very affected by the situation.

"Fabio is in a recovery phase," said Berkhout during the Dutch television show De Avondetappe of broadcaster NOS. "Time will tell if he can return, of course we all hope for that. It remains to be seen whether his body can recover so that Fabio can become a top athlete again. It just takes time. There is so much fire in Fabio, he just has to return to racing. But now we have to wait and see.

Groenewegen is also suffering from other consequences of this crash and is receiving mental support. "There are only losers in this case," explained the representative of the riders. "Dylan gets mental guidance, because he has seen so many things coming at him. Especially on social media, we have never seen that in cycling. He receives threats every day. It remains to be seen when that will stop of decrease. It's not that he feels very comfortable, he lives very much with the consequences of the crash.

"Both riders are very well guided by their teams and entourage. We are all trying to ensure that they will be sprinting soon."
