Ineos Grenadiers' Egan Bernal has withdrawn from the Tour de France just before the start of the 17th stage.

The defending champion of the French grand tour hasn't been at his top level during the latest stages of the 2020 edition of the race, which was mostly evident during the 15th stage where he couldn't hold the pace of the favourites during the climb of the Grand Colombier and lost more than seven minutes at the end of the stage.

Although the Colombian indicated on the rest day that he was going to continue in the race, in the end he decided to withdraw ahead of the 17th stage of competition. "This is obviously not how I wanted my Tour de France to end, but I agree that it is the right decision for me in the circumstances," said Bernal. "I have the greatest respect for this race and I am already looking forward to coming back in the years ahead."

"We have taken this decision with Egan's best interests at heart," added Ineos Grenadiers Team Principal Sir Dave Brailsford. "Egan is a true champion who loves to race, but he is also a young rider, with many Tours ahead of him and at this point, on balance, we feel it is wiser for him to stop racing."
