Astana's Miguel Angel Lopez claimed the victory at the 17th stage of the Tour de France after doing a solo effort in the last kilometres of the stage.

On his debut in the French grand tour, the Colombian was part of the favourites' group during the last climb of the day of Meribel Col de la Loze. The rider did two attacks in the last kilometres and the latter gave him a gap big enough to cross the finish line on his own.

"I'm super happy," said Lopez. "It fills me with emotions because I have worked so hard and it hasn't been easy to get here and I'm very emotional. The truth is that I've worked hard at home with my family, my wife, my kid and it hasn't been easy.

"I was confident about today, this was my terrain, anything above 1000 metres is like being at home, and I was waiting for a moment like today's and in the team we have been fighting from the start, and we deserve this."

With this win, the rider has climbed to the third position of the general classification. "I've been dreaming of this for a long time, didn't lose the faith and continued fighting day by day. The team has been magnificent, from the start they took very good care of me.

"Today the guys were perfect, Omar (Fraile) emptied himself to be able to be next to me from the start, and I was surprised because for him it was a bit difficult to go through the Madeleine and be with me for the rest of that stretch until the start of the last climb. I am surprised with my teammates and with the teamwork and I think we deserve this. We deserve this great victory and above all because it is the birthday of our boss (Alexandr) Vinokourov and I think it is perfect that we can celebrate it like this."
