UAE Team Emirates' Tadej Pogacar has lost some seconds in the General Classification battle of the Tour de France but climbed to the top of the King of the Mountains standings.

The young Slovenian started the 17th stage of the French grand tour in the second position of the overall standing, 40 seconds behind his fellow countryman Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma). The stage promised to be a battle on the high mountains and it didn't disappoint.

Although Pogacar managed to stay with the favourites throughout the two climbs of the day, the last ramps before the finish line proved to be too challenging for him, and he lost 17 seconds to Roglic and now he sits 57 seconds behind him. But he received also good news on the day, as he climbed to the top of the General Classification standing.

"I lost a few seconds on what was a really hard climb," said Pogacar. "I gave my best, the team gave their best, and we got third place on the day to show for it. Tomorrow we will be ready for another very tough stage and then there will also be the time trial on Saturday, the Tour is not over and anything can still happen."
