Team Ineos' Michal Kwiatkowski has taken the victory of the 18th stage of the Tour de France, a win he could celebrate with his teammate Richard Carapaz as both arrived together alone to the finish line. Primoz Roglic maintained the lead of the General Classification.

The 18th stage of the French grand tour was 175 kilometres long between Meribel and La Roche-sur-Foron over a route that included two climbs of the first category, one of the second and a hors category ascent. A group of 32 riders including Richard Carapaz, Michal Kwiatkowski, Thomas De Gendt and Marc Hirschi, formed an escape group early in on the stage, but as the climbs went by, many of them were eventually dropped.

While Carapaz and Kwiatkowski went alone in front of everybody else -Hirschi was for a while with them but crashed and was left behind- Mikel Landa (Bahrain-McLaren) tried once more to make a move, and he managed to create a gap with the pack during the hors category climb of the day. On that climb Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) tried to launch an attack but Primoz Roglic himself controlled that attempt.

On the gravel stretch of the Plateau des Glieres, Richie Porte suffered a puncture and was left behind from the favourites' group, but on the next climb he managed to return to that group. Meanwhile, Carapaz -the new leader of the Points Classification- and Kwiatkowski arrived together to the final stretch together and did the final metres in a celebratory mood and the latter took the stage win.

Roglic and Pogacar arrived together to the finish line and the Slovenian national champion maintains the lead of the General Classification.
