Anna van der Breggen (The Netherlands) has taken the title of the individual time trial at the World Championships in Imola, Italy.

The Dutch former road world champion went through the 31.7-kilometre course with a start and finish in the Imola circuit, in 40 minutes and 20 seconds. Van der Breggen made a better time than Swiss rider Marlen Reusser - who stepped on the second spot of the final podium - and her fellow countrywoman Ellen van Dijk, who finished on the third position.

Danish rider Emma Norsgaard set the first real competitive time with 41 minutes and 42 seconds, but her time was then beaten by Amber Neben (USA) -who finished two seconds faster - and Grace Brown (Australia).

Current time trial world champion Chloe Dygert (USA) was on her way to defend her title, as she had better split times than her competitors, but on a corner she lost control of the bike and went over a crash barrier. Her condition is unknown but her team confirmed she has been conscious the whole time.

In the end, the title was decided between Van der Breggen, Reusser and Van Dijk, being the former road World Champion the one that set the best time in the competition.
