Jumbo-Visma's Wout van Aert has finished in the second position of the road race at the World Championships of Imola, Italy.

The rider, who was riding with the colours of Belgium, was part of the main group throughout the course of the race and managed to stay with the favourites during the final part of the competition. But the winner of the 2020 Strade Bianche and two stages of the Tour de France, couldn't follow Julian Alaphilippe's decisive move on the last climb of the day and had to settle with a silver medal, just like in the Individual Time Trial two days ago.

"I don’t have to blame myself or the team," said Van Aert. "We rode the way we wanted. When Alaphilippe attacked, I could not join him. He was the strongest. He showed that on the climb.

"Primoz (Roglic) did his best in the chase, but we all were on the limit. This second place is painful. Just like Friday, one rider was better than me. I would have liked to give the team more than this silver medal."
