Marc Hirschi (Sunweb) has taken the victory of La Fleche Wallonne by being the strongest rider on the last ascent of the Muur de Huy.

The Belgian classic was 202 kilometres long between Herve and the Mur de Huy over the familiar rolling course. The escape of the day included riders like Mauri Vansevenant (Deceuninck-Quick-Step), Aaron Van Pocke (Sport Vlaanderen-Baloise) and Marlon Gaillard (Total Direct Energie) among others.

Back in the pack, teams like UAE Team Emirates, Ineos Grenadiers and EF Pro Cycling took turns to set the rhythm and force a group finale. The toughness of the course took a toll on the front group and the pack and riders were dropped as the kilometres passed until only Vansevenant remained in front.

The Belgian rider of Deceuninck-Quick-Step rode most of the last part of the course by himself while behind him Rigoberto Uran (EF Pro Cycling) went on to try to catch him. Just before the last ascent of the day, Vansevenant went out of the course and lost some time and was first caught by Uran and then by the rest of the pack.

The last climb of the Muur de Huy witnessed attacks by riders like Michael Woods (EF Pro Cycling), Michal Kwiatkowski (Ineos Grenadiers) and Richie Porte (Trek-Segafredo) but riders like Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), Marc Hirschi and Benoit Cosnefroy (AG2R La Mondiale) remained with them.

In the last metre, the Swiss rider of Sunweb -who took one stage victory in the Tour de France and finished in the third position of the road race at the 2020 World Championships, took the advantage that gave him the victory of the Classic. Cosnefroy and Woods completed the podium of the race.
