UAE Team Emirates' Diego Ulissi has taken the victory of the second stage at the Giro d'Italia, the seventh of his career in the grand tour.

The second day of competition in the Italian race was 149 kilometres between Alcamo and Agrigento over a route that included a mild ascension in the last kilometres. The escape of the day included riders like Ben Gastauer and Thomas De Gendt, and the last of its riders was caught with ten kilometres to go.

Astana's Aleksandr Vlasov retired in the middle of the stage with stomach problem and is the second of the Kazakh team to do so, as Miguel Angel Lopez was forced to withdraw on the first day of the race after a heavy crash left him with a deep cut in the leg. The peloton increased the pace with eight kilometres to go to prepare their positions ahead of the final ascent.

The first rider to make a move was Luca Wackermann (Vini Zabu) and he was soon joined by Diego Ulissi (UAE Team Emirates), Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe) and Mikkel Honore (Deceuninck-Quick-Step). The Italian was the fastest to cross the finish line ahead of the former World Champion and the Danish rider.

The General Classification didn't suffer significant differences and the Italian Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) retained the Pink Jersey.
