EF Pro Cycling's Jonathan Caicedo has taken the win of the third stage of the Giro d'Italia on a day in which one GC favourite lost the possibilities to take the victory of the race.
The third stage of the Italian grand tour took the peloton through a 150-kilometre route with a finish on the first category climb of Mount Etna. The day started with a heavy crash of Geraint Thomas (Ineos) at the neutral zone, that affected his performance to the point that he arrived to the finish line 11 minutes and 17 seconds behind the winner of the day.
Eight riders formed the escape of the day, including Victor Campenaerts (NTT Pro Cycling), Giovanni Visconti (Vini Zabu), Jonathan Caicedo (EF Pro Cycling) and Lawson Craddock. As the kilometres and the last climb past, only the Ecuadorian and the Italian remaind and a last movement of Caicedo gave him the victory of the day.
Behind then, Thomas seemed to suffer a lot during the climb, and he arrived to the end with the help of his teammates. Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) also seemed to be affected with the movements in the peloton by riders like Wilco Kelderman (Sunweb) and moved to the 25th position of the General Classification, being more than three minutes behind Caicedo.
Deceuninck-Quick-Step's Joao Almeida climbed to the top of the General Classification and became the third Portuguese in history to lead a grand tour.
