EF Pro Cycling's Ruben Guerreiro has taken the victory of the ninth stage of the Giro d'Italia while Joao Almeida kept the Maglia Rosa.

The ninth day of competition in the Italian grand tour took the riders through a 208-kilometre route with a start in San Salvo and a finish in Roccaraso over a mountainous course that featured two climbs of the second category and two of the first category. The escape of the day included riders like Giovanni Visconti, Larry Warbasse, Ruben Guerreiro, Jonathan Castroviejo and Mikkel Bjerg, and it could build a gap of more than six minutes with the pack.

The front group lost members as the climbs went by until only five riders remained. During the last climb of the day, Castroviejo accelerated and only Guerreiro could follow and their battle lasted until the last metres, where the Portuguese rider made his move and left the Spaniard in the second position of the day.

Almeida finished the first week of competition on top of the General Classification and he's followed by Wilco Kelderman (Sunweb) at 30 seconds and Pello Bilbao (Bahrain-McLaren) at 39 seconds.
