Bora-hansgrohe's Peter Sagan has taken the victory of the tenth stage in the Giro d'Italia, the first in the race of his career, and after finishing third times before in the second position in previous stages.

The first stage of the second week of competition started with the news of eight positive tests of Covid-19 which led to the withdrawal of Steven Kruijswijk, Michael Matthews and the entire Jumbo-Visma and Mitchelton-Scott teams.

The tenth stage of the Italian grand your was 177 kilometres long between Lanciano and Tortoreto over a rolling course that featured three climbs of the fourth category and one of the third. From the beginning Sagan tried his luck and although the pack repelled his first attempts and the ones of other riders.

A new front group formed by riders like the former world champion, Filippo Ganna and Tao Geoghegan Hart took the lead after the 100-kilometre-mark and although they were also caught by the pack, some of them continued trying until they were successful. Sagan and Ben Swift attacked from the front group on the second climb to the Tortoreto and during the final climb, the Slovakian left the British behind.

Sagan took a solo victory and UAE Team Emirates' Brandon McNulty crossed the finish line in the second position at 19 seconds. The GC leader Joao Almeida was third and this was enough for him to keep the Maglia Rosa for another day.

One of the favourites for the overall title, Astana's Jakob Fuglsang had mechanical problem which eventually led him to take his teammate Fabio Felline's bike, but that made him lose one minute and 38 seconds and drop to the eleventh position of the General Classification.
