UAE Team Emirates' Diego Ulissi has sprinted to victory in the 13th stage of the Giro d'Italia, achieving his eight win in the Italian race.
The 13th stage of the Italian grand tour took the riders between Cervia and Moselice over a 192-kilometre route that included two climbs of the fourth category in the last kilometres with the potential of changing the outcome of it. Seven riders managed to break free from the pack early on the stage, including Simon Pellaud -who is already a breakaway familiar face for this race, as well as Rodrigo Contreras and Geoffrey Bouchard.
The escape built a gap of more than three minutes with the peloton -which was led by Bora-hasgrohe trying to prepare the field for Peter Sagan to strike again. The speed of the pack managed to catch the escapees during the second climb of the day, which also caused it to break it in two, leaving behind riders like Sagan and Ben Swift and in front, the wearer of the Maglia Rosa Joao Almeida.
The victory of the day was fought at the front group and Ulissi showed to be the fastest rider -taking like this his eight victory in the race, while Almeida was second and Patrick Konrad (Bora-hansgrohe) was third, while the group of Sagan arrived 23 seconds behind and the one of Arnaud Demare, 41 seconds behind, which meant that the Frenchman kept the Maglia Ciclamino for another day.
Almeida keeps the lead of the General Classification ahead of the second time trial of the race, which will be over a 34.1-kilometre route between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene.
