Bahrain-McLaren's Jan Tratnik has survived the escape of the day and took the victory of the 16th stage at the Giro d'Italia. Joao Almeida extended his lead of the General Classification, seizing two seconds over the number two of the standings Wilco Kelderman.

The 16th stage of the Italian race was 229 kilometres long between Udine and San Daniele del Friuli over a route that included five climbs of the third category and one opening ascent of the second category. A big group of more than 20 riders escaped from the pack in the first kilometres but it got smaller as the climbs passed.

With around 60 kilometres to go, Manuele Boaro and Jan Tratnik were the only riders remaining in front and they kept going and making the gap with the pack bigger and bigger until it was of more than 14 minutes, but also with the chasers. But around 20 kilometres later, and during another climb the Italian of Astana was left behind by the Slovenian of Bahrain McLaren.

During the last stretch of the route, Tratnik was joined by Ben O'Connor (NTT Pro Cycling), but he made a strong move in the last kilometre and took the victory of the day by crossing the finish line seven seconds ahead of his companion. The leader of the General Classification Joao Almeida (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) arrived to the end 12 minutes and 54 seconds behind the winner of the stage, and two seconds ahead his more direct rival Wilco Kelderman (Sunweb).
