NTT Pro Cycling's Ben O'Connor has climbed to victory in the 17th stage of the Giro d'Italia. The GC situation remains unchanged and Joao Almeida keeps the top position for another day.

A 203-kilometre route that included one climb of the third category and three of the first category -including the mountain finish- waited for the riders for the 17th day of competition in the Italian grand tour. At almost 50 kilometres into the stage, the escape of the day was formed by 20 riders and included names like Ben O'Connor, Rohan Dennis, Diego Ulissi, Louis Meintjes, Ilnur Zakarin and Thomas De Gendt.

The front group created a gap of more than seven minutes with the peloton and the challenging climbs managed to break it at times but it got back together several times. On the last kilometres there were attempts of an attack and the most successful one was of NTT Pro Cycling's Ben Connor -who wanted a new chance after finishing in the second place the day before- with 7 kilometres to go.

The Australian crossed the finish line 31 seconds ahead of Hermann Pernsteiner and one minute and ten seconds before De Gendt, taking like this his first stage in a grand tour. The first two riders of the General Classification, Joao Almeida and Wilco Kelderman, were successfully protected on the climbs by their teammates and they arrived together to the finish, leaving the situation unchanged for another day and with the Portuguese rider wearing Pink for one more stage.
