Team Sunweb's Wilco Kelderman has climbed to the top of the General Classification in the Giro d'Italia after the 18th stage of the race.

The Queen Stage of the Italian race was set to be challenging with a route that featured climbs of the Campo Carlo Magno, the famous Passo dello Stelvio and a finish on the new climb of the Laghi di Cancano. The pack got together just before the climb of the Stelvio and little by little it started getting reduced until only Kelderman, his teammate Jai Hindley, and Ineos' Tao Geoghegan Hart and Rohan Dennis remained in front, while the Pink jersey wearer was distanced.

On the last part of the climb, Kelderman also lost contact with the other three men and survived the rest of the stage on his own, but he managed to climb to the top of the General Classification. Meanwhile, Hindley got to the last kilometre alone with Geoghegan Hart and managed to take the win of the stage, climbing like this to the second position of the overall standing.

"It was a crazy stage, I think it was the hardest day of my life," said Kelderman. "It was a big fight all day but the stage win for Jai is super nice. We dropped Almeida on the Stelvio and from then the race was on. Ineos were super strong with two guys and I couldn’t hold onto them so I just had to race at my own pace behind.

"I was just counting down the kilometres and going full gas to the line. I’m happy with today, now we’ll recover and make plans and see what happens on the weekend. I think in the end it’s good we have two riders up there."

"To get a win for the team it’s massive and a win for me personally, it’s a huge step forward in my career," added Hindley. "I’m over the moon to take the win today. I’ve ridden around in this area a fair bit and I knew the climbs, it’s a stunning part of the world and yeah, it’s just amazing."
