Sam Bennett (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) has sprinted to victory in the fourth stage of the Vuelta a España while Primoz Roglic has maintained the lead of the General Classification.
A 191.7-kilometre route welcomed the peloton for the fourth stage of the Spanish grand tour and it was suitable for the fast men. Four men broke free from the pack on the first kilometres of the day: Harry Tanfield, Luis Angel Mate, Jesus Ezquerra and the most combative rider of the previous stage Willie Smit, and they built a gap of more than four minutes with the rest.
Teams like Deceuninck-Quick-Step, Bora-hansgrohe, Trek-Segafredo, Movistar, Ineos Grenadiers and UAE Team Emirates took the lead of the pack to control the escapees and force a final sprint. With around 23 kilometres to go, Smit tried to make a solo move from the front, but he was the last men of the escapees to be caught by the peloton with 14 kilometres to go.
The last kilometres of the race were fast and active, with the teams with sprinters trying to position their riders ahead of the final. The last kilometre included several curves and in the last metres UAE Team Emirates' Jasper Philipsen was the first to make a strong move and his victory seemed almost certain until Sam Bennett proved once again to be in excellent shape and he overtook the Belgian in the last moment.
Primoz Roglic arrived to the finish line with the pack, and he maintains the lead of the General Classification ahead of a mountainous weekend.
