Josef Cerny (CCC Team) has taken his maiden victory in a grand tour in the 19th stage of the Giro d'Italia.

The 19th day of competition in the Italian grand tour started with a protest of the riders, who didn't want to do the longest stage of the race in the cold, windy and rainy conditions that were present along the route. After discussions with the race organisers, it was agreed that the course would be shortened to 124 kilometres.

The former Czech national champion and current holder of the time trial title of his country, was part of the breakaway of the day and a late move allowed him to create a gap big enough for him to take his first victory in a grand tour.

"History won't remember if today was a short or a long stage," said Cerny. "I just won a stage of the Giro d'Italia and it was fantastic to raise my hands up in the air. It's a nice victory. It makes me feel really happy.

"I enjoyed my time in the breakaway and it was a bit of a lottery to go for the win. I'm glad I still had good legs today after climbing the Stelvio yesterday. It feels good to get a win at the Giro."
