Michael Woods takes victory of seventh stage in Vuelta a España, Carapaz retains GC lead

EF Pro Cycling's Michael Woods has taken the victory of the seventh stage of the 2020 Vuelta a España. Richard Carapaz has maintained the lead of the General Classification.
Remi Cavagna (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) was the first rider to try to escape on the 159.7 kilometres long route that featured two climbs of the first category. But soon after he was reeled back in by the pack and 17 riders took the lead, including Alejandro Valverde, Guillaume Martin and Tim Wellens.
Back in the peloton, Chris Froome led Ineos' pace to try to control the gap with the escapees to protect Carapaz' Red Jersey. Michael Woods attacked with 22 kilometres to go on the last first category climb of the day and on the downhill he was joined by Valverde, Omar Fraile, Martin and Nans Peters.
All of the front riders tried to escape but Woods made his decisive move on the last kilometre and crossed the finish line four seconds ahead of Fraile and Valverde. The pack arrived to the finish line 56 seconds after the Canadian of EF and the Ecuadorian of Ineos Grenadiers saved the lead of the General Classification for another day.
