Pascal Ackermann (Bora-hansgrohe) has taken the victory of the ninth stage at the Vuelta a España after Sam Bennett was relegated for pushing a Trek-Segafredo rider during the last metres of the course.

After several exciting days on the mountains, the ninth stage of the Spanish grand tour presented a new opportunity for the sprinters with a mostly flat 157.7-kilometre route with a finish in Aguilar de Campo. Riders of the local teams Caja Rural-Seguros RGA and Burgos-BH Artiz Bagües and Juan Felipe Osorio escaped from the peloton soon after the real start and managed to create a gap of more than five minutes with the pack.

Meanwhile, teams with sprinters like Deceuninck-Quick-Step, Bora-hansgrohe, Total Direct Energie and UAE Team Emirates were at the front of the peloton to force a fast finish. The escapees were caught just before the 20-kilometre mark and the pack rode together taking the positions ahead of the final showdown.

The final metres were ridden very fast and Pascal Ackermann (Bora-hansgrohe) was the first to launch his sprint but Sam Bennett (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) showed once again that he's one of the strongest sprinters at the moment and took his second victory in the current edition of the race. Ackermann crossed the finish line in the second place, Lotto-Soudal's Gerben Thijssen in the third position, and Max Kanter (Sunweb) and Jasper Philipsen (UAE Team Emirates) completed the top five of the day.

UPDATE: After a complaint was filled, the commissaries decided to relegate Bennett following a close view of the images of him pushing a Trek-Segafredo rider just before the last stretch of the stage. The victory of the day then went to Ackermann.
