Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) has taken back the lead of the General Classification at the Vuelta a España after crossing the finish line ten seconds ahead of his most direct rival Primoz Roglic.

The 12th stage of the Spanish grand tour was set to be one of the most difficult on the saddle for the entire peloton. The General Classification had the potential of being reshaped after the route that had a finish on top of the Alto de l'Angliru and this is exactly what happened.

Carapaz remained with the pack throughout the entire stage and during the last stretch, after only the favourites remained, he changed the pace and left Roglic struggling behind. The Ecuadorian arrived to the finish line 10 seconds ahead of the Slovenian national champion and got back to the top of the overall classification.

"This climb made a natural selection," he said. "We already spent a lot of energy yesterday and it was a very hard stage today. I remembered it from 2017 but it’s been incredible. I tried in the end, Mas and Carthy also went for it and I continued with my pace and that gave me a 10-second advantage. That’s great for us, we’re going towards the time trial with the idea to give our best and defend the leadership.

"I'm very happy to wear [La Roja] again. It’s a good thing for me, for the team, and for everything we’ve been doing."
