Belgian sprinter Jasper Philipsen (UAE Team Emirates) has been the fastest at the final metres of the 15th stage of the Vuelta a España and crossed the line in the first position.

The 230.8-kilometre stage was the longest of the current edition of the race and the riders had to face a challenging route that included five ascends of the third category, under the rain and wind of the Spanish autumn. After the GC riders stayed behind as their time was taken with three kilometres to go, sprinters continued and Philipsen was the strongest one at the uphill finish, taking like this his first grand tour victory of his career.

"It's an incredible emotion that I can't describe," said the Belgian rider. "This victory is very important to me, I have been waiting for the right moment throughout the Vuelta, and it has finally arrived.

"At the beginning of the stage I didn't think it could be my day but in the end I was ready for a final that turned out to be ideal for me."
