EF Pro Cycling's Magnus Cort Nielsen has taken the win of the 16th stage of the Vuelta a España after being the strongest rider in a small bunch sprint. Primoz Roglic has maintained the lead of the overall classification.

The escape of the day was formed by riders like Angel Madrazo, Juan Felipe Osorio, Remi Cavagna, Robert Stannard and Kobe Goossens, and they took an advantage of around five minutes with the pack. Behind them, Movistar took control of the pack to maintain the gap with the front at bay.

With 17 kilometres to go, Cavagna launched an attack and went on by himself but his efforts were not strong enough, and he was caught with two kilometres to go. Former world champion Alejandro Valverde was the first one to launch the sprint but was soon caught by Cort Nielsen, who took the victory of the day.

Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) crossed the finish line in the second position and extended his General Classification lead by six seconds. Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) sits on the second position of the overall classification at 45 seconds from the Slovenian national champion and Hugh Carthy (EF Pro Cycling) is in third position, 53 seconds behind the leader.
