Jumbo-Visma's Wout van Aert is starting next weekend in the cyclocross World Championships as one of the favourites after his recent performances.

Just days after the Belgian cyclocross champion extended his contract with the Dutch team until 2024, he won the World Cup of Overijse showing a strong performance. This victory also secured him the general classification of the World Cup and is his fifth of the season.

"I was really looking forward to it," said Van Aert. "In the first two laps I immediately set a high pace. Then Mathieu [van der Poel, Ed.] took over to slow down the pace. However, I didn't want to. I had a big gap because of his flat tire, but then I crashed.

"It was a tough cross where the incidents were decisive. Mathieu kept pushing, so I was never really comfortable. Only towards the end did I get a little more space. It was especially pleasant to be leader instead of the chaser. This victory makes me very happy."

Now the rider is ready for the cyclocross World Championships of Ostend, Belgium, next weekend. "I don't think I'm the outspoken favourite," he explained. "Mathieu has already booked more victories. I am happy with the way I can go to the World Championships, but in principle he has more advantages."
