Filippo Ganna (Ineos-Grenadiers) has taken the victory of the time trial at the UAE Tour and Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) has taken the lead of the General Classification.

The time trial World Champion completed the 13-kilometre-long route in 13 minutes and 56 seconds, reaching an average speed of 55.98 kilometres per hour. EF Education-Nippo's Stefan Bissegger finished the circuit 14 seconds slower than Ganna and UAE Team Emirates's Mikkel Bjerg did it 21 seconds slower than the Italian.

The leader after the first stage of the season Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) didn't start in the fight against the clock as his team withdrew from the race after finding a positive case of Covid-19 in one of the staff member and after which they decided to not put the race bubble at further risk.

Pogacar finished in the fourth position of the day, 24 seconds behind the Italian of Ineos-Grenadiers, which was enough for him to take the lead of the General Classification.

"It's never easy to win a time trial even if you do it with good legs and a strong focus," said Ganna at the end of the stage. "Luckily my body was ready for this effort today. It's a fantastic result for me and for the team. It was a bit strange to ride in the desert and it's my first time at the UAE Tour. It's hard to ride at 55 or 56km/h but I'm really happy today."

"I'm really happy with my performance today," added Pogacar. "The wind was quite strong. I did my best and it was a really good time, I'm happy to have the leader's jersey. I prefer to be ahead than behind on GC."
