Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) has trumped Gino Mäder in the last ascent of the seventh stage of Paris-Nice and extended his GC lead.
The seventh stage of the Race to the Sun was 119.5 kilometres long, being the first of the two stages shortened due to the Covid-19 lockdowns in the region and featured three climbs of the second category and a challenging finale on a first category climb in Valdeblore La Colmaine. Thirteen riders -including Nielson Powless, Laurens De Plus, Alexey Lutsenko, Gino Mäder and Kenny Elissonde- attacked early on the route and formed a breakaway that lasted until the last metres.
Anthony Perez (Cofidis) -who was also in the breakaway- took enough points during the day to secure the Polka Dot jersey of the King of the Mountains. The front group became smaller with the challenging climbs until only Powless, Elissonde and Mäder remained with ten kilometres to go.
The young Swiss managed to get rid of his companions while Roglic stayed at the wheel of Max Schachmann (Bora-hansgrohe) when he launched an attack on the last stretch. In the last kilometre, the Slovenian managed to leave the others behind and continued at a good pace, which allowed him to deprive Mäder from the victory at the last moment.
Schachmann maintains the second place of the General Classification at 52 seconds from Roglic, while Aleksandr Vlasov climbed to the third position, being one minute and eleven seconds behind the leader.
