Lotto Soudal's Andreas Kron has taken the victory of the first stage of the Volta a Catalunya after beating Luis Leon Sanchez.
The 22-year-old was part of a late breakaway that was formed with around 20 kilometres to go. The Danish rider crossed the finish line ahead of Sánchez, Cofidis' Remy Rochas and Bora-hansgrohe's Lennard Kämna.
"This is crazy, just fantastic", said Kron after his first WorldTour victory ever. "Since I started cycling at the age of nine, I dreamt of winning a stage in a WorldTour race. This is the biggest scene of cycling.
"In the Tour of Luxemburg last year I won by beating Diego Ulissi, so I knew I would have a chance today. I did my job in the front group, to stay ahead, but I kept in mind to save some forces. I started the sprint in ideal circumstances, in last position and well protected from the cross wind. It went perfect.
"We show that the Team Management made the right choice. The riders of my generation, like Poga?ar, fight all the way, until the last second, and we prove we can beat the bigger names. And this is just the beginning of the season."
