Ineos-Grenadiers' Rohan Dennis has taken the victory of the Individual Time Trial of the second stage at the Volta a Catalunya, while Joao Almeida took the GC lead.

The 100th edition of the race included again an individual fight against the clock and shaped the General Classification ahead of the mountain days. The 18.5-kilometre course in Banyoles -the same place that hosted a team time trial in 2017, started with an outstanding time of Remi Cavagna, who completed it in 22 minutes and 32 seconds.

But the two-time World champion in the discipline Dennis still had to go, and he went through the route five seconds faster than the French rider of Deceuninck-Quick-Step. Lotto-Soudal's Andreas Korn was the last rider to go down the ramp as the overall leader but his time wasn't good enough to keep it and Almeida climbed to its top instead.

Meanhwile, Richie Porte, Adam Yates and Geraint Thomas of Ineos-Grenadiers, were on the top ten of the day, which put them in a competitive place ahead of the first mountain day: a 203.1-kilometre stage with an arrival in the ski station Vallter 200, which will be the first challenging day for the GC riders.
