Astana-Premium Tech's Alex Aranburu has taken the victory of the second stage of Itzulia Basque Country while Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) maintains the lead of the General Classification.

The second stage of the Spanish race was 154.8 kilometres long and took the riders between Zalla and Sestao over a route that featured two climbs of the third category, a last one of the second category before descending after which there was a small climb to the finish line. The escape of the day was formed by seven men and included names like Ben Hermans, Martijn Tusveld and Kevin Vermaeke.

The front men managed to create a gap of more than four minutes but were caught on the last ascent of the stage. On the last climb of the day David Gaudi (Groupama-FDJ) and Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) changed the rhythm and managed to create a gap with the favourites' group while riders like Roglic, Ion Izagirre (Astana-Premium Tech), Mikel Landa (Bahrain Victorious) and Max Schachmann (Bora-hansgrohe), among others increased the pace to catch them.

On the descent, the group got back together, Aranburu made his move and got a gap or around 30 seconds on the descent and crossed the finish line 15 seconds ahead of the group, having enough time to take a moment to celebrate. Roglic kept the lead of the overall standings, while Aranburu sits now five seconds behind him, Brandon McNulty, six seconds and Pogacar managed to grab a few seconds and reduced his gap to 24 seconds.
