Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) has taken the victory of the third stage at Itzulia Basque Country after an exciting fight against Primoz Roglic.

The third day of the Spanish race was 167.7 kilometres long and took the peloton between Amurrio and Laudio/Ermualde over a mountain route that featured two climbs of the third category in the first half, one of the second category and an ascent finish on a first category climb. The first escape of the day included seven riders and names like Larry Warbasse, Mikkel Honoré and Daniel Navarro.

This group managed to create a gap of more than seven minutes with the pack but slowly it also picked up the pace until the first ramps of the penultimate climb. Soon after, the reduced pack caught the remaining escapees, Pogacar and Roglic attacked on the descent and created a gap that they maintained up until the last ascent of the day.

The duel of the two Slovenians continued on the last kilometres of the day and the winner of the 2020 Tour de France -who took the Yellow Jersey from Roglic on the penultimate day of the race- crossed the finish line in the first position. Despite being second, the Slovenian national champion maintained the GC lead, while Pogacar climbed to the second position and sits at 20 seconds from the leader.
