Deceuninck-Quick-Step's Remco Evenepoel has finished in the seventh position of the opening stage at the Giro d'Italia.

The first stage of the Italian race was an emotional one for the young Belgian as he has been close to ten months out of competition due to the injuries he suffered at the 2020 Il Lombardia. The rider doesn't have a clear objective in the race beyond preparing for the Olympics of Tokyo 2020.

"They call it making a comeback the tough way," said Evenepoel after the stage to Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws. "I didn't expect to suffer so much in my return to racing. I really didn't think of winning or the Pink Jersey. I just wanted to enjoy it and feel the pain again. And be sure, I felt it.

"A seventh place is amazing, by the way. Fantastic. On some of the favourites, (Joao) Almeida and I have already taken around twenty seconds in such a short ride. That's promising. Now it all comes does to keep a close eye on things for the next ten days and support each other as teammates. The Wolfpack, you know. In the good and the bad days."
