Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Soudal) has taken the victory of the fifth stage at the Giro d'Italia after some chaotic last kilometres.
The fourth stage in the Italian race was 177 kilometres long between Modena and Cattolica over a flat course that was suitable for a fast finale and that could give a break to the peloton after a difficult third stage.
The first escapees of the day were Simon Pellaud and Davide Gabburo and they were later on joined by Alexis Gougeard. The stage was in general calm but the last kilometres were quite nervous and Pavel Sivakov (Ineos Grenadiers) crashed with around 16 kilometres to go but was able to continue.
With four kilometres to go, there was another crash of Mikel Landa against one of the men that were signalling a traffic island, Joe Dombrowski also hit the ground but he seemed to recover faster. The Spaniard remained on the floor and had to be taken by ambulance.
A few kilometres later, the escapees were caught by a nervous peloton and teams like Bora-hansgrohe and UAE Team Emirates were in charge preparing for a final sprint. The bunch finale was chaotic like the last kilometres and Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal) was the fastest man, crossing the finish line ahead of Giacomo Nizzolo and Elia Viviani.
Alessandro De Marchi has retained the lead of the General Classification.
