Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe) has sprinted to victory in the tenth stage of the Giro d'Italia, Egan Bernal stays on top of the General Classification.

The last stage before the first rest day was 139 kilometres long between L'Aquila and Folugno over a course that included a four category climb and finish on a flat stretch suitable for the fast men. On the day before, Lotto-Soudal's Caleb Ewan -who had won two of the fast stages in the race- had to retire due to knee pain so there was one less favourite for the day's win.

The escape of the day included riders like Simon Pellaud, Umberto Marengo, Gino Mäder and Taco van der Hoorn, among others. The breakaway was caught with 43 kilometres to go as Bora-hansgrohe sped up the pace ahead of the last climb of the day and with the objective of dropping some of the fast men in the favour of Peter Sagan.

The German team maintained the pace until the end and all the efforts were repaid by Sagan, who showed a strong sprint and crossed the finish line ahead of Fernando Gaviria (UAE Team Emirates) and Davide Cimolai (Israel Start-Up Nation). The intermediate sprints of the day were another battlefront as the GC men want to seize as many seconds as possible and at the end of the stage Egan Bernal (Ineos-Grenadiers) maintained the GC lead and is followed by Remco Evenepoel (Deceuninck-Quick-Step), who managed to gain one second.
