Deceuninck-Quick-Step's Remco Evenepoel has arrived to the first rest day of the Giro d'Italia in the second overall position.

There's only been nine months since the horror crash that Evenepoel suffered on Il Lombardia. And his return to cycling has been successful so far in the Giro d'Italia, where he's currently in the second place of the General Classification, 14 seconds behind the leader Egan Bernal (Ineos-Grenadiers).

"If I wouldn't think that I can win the Giro d'Italia, if I wouldn't believe in myself, I wouldn't have been at the start line in Torino," said the Belgian during the rest day press conference. "I don't feel any pressure, I'm just happy for being back after nine months without competing. I hope to continue like this."

The rider is facing a direct competition with Bernal, another young talent that is one of the favourites to win the race. But Evenepoel thinks other riders are still in the mix and that he has some advantages at the end of the race.

"We have faced each other in the past twice," he explained about the Colombian. "But this is the first time that we will really compete. It's not a rivalry. It is an honour to ride next to a rider that has already won the Tour de France. But if you're a winner, you want to win every day, so I'm not really thinking of Egan.

"The less time I have to make up, the better. There are other guys too. Vlasov only lost seven seconds in the first time trial. You have to take that into account. The Giro isn't only about Bernal and me. There are riders like Vlasov, (Simon) Yates. Nobody has lost the Giro yet. Last week the differences were very small and nobody of the top ten has been eliminated yet from the fight for the Maglia Rosa. There's still a lot of racing to be done. But it is to my advantage that there is a time trial on the last day."
