Ineos-Grenadiers' Egan Bernal has extended his lead in the General Classification of the Giro d'Italia after a successful performance on the 11th stage of the race.
The eleventh day of competition in the Corsa Rosa included four stretches of sterrato that caused a shift in the General Classification. Ineos-Grenadiers set the rhythm in the front and managed to drop Remco Evenepoel and later on, Bernal's good legs also made a difference that allowed him to extend his overall lead.
"Today was a really hard day and with the Sterrato, we expected some big gaps and there were a lot of GC riders who lost time," said the Colombian. "I’m happy to arrive in the front and we need to stay focused for the next few days.
"The pace was really hard when Buchmann went and I asked on the radio where he was on GC. They told me more than 1”40”, so I had some margin to play with there. The EF guys were pulling really hard and when Carthy went I went across to Buchmann. We worked together a little bit and gained some time on the other guys. We can be happy with this day."
