Tour de France

Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) has taken the win of the fifth stage at the Tour de France on a day the General Classification suffered some changes.

The first time trial of the French grand tour was won by the Slovenian at the expense of Stefan Küng, who was winning the stage until the winner of the 2020 edition of the race crossed the line. It was an important day for the GC riders, as some kept good times ahead of the rest of the race, while others lost some time.

Here are the reactions of some of the important riders of the day:

Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ):

"We already saw last year on the Planche des Belles Filles time trial what he (Tadej Pgacar) was capable of. He came ready on the Tour and he is in my opinion the best rider in the world. He was very strong, so hats off to him for his performance. We all did a great job, we all gave it our all. I can’t blame myself for anything. I did what I could and what I wanted. Obviously, I’m still disappointed because I came to win and not to come second, but the Tour is not over. There is one time trial left and I hope his opponents will tire him out in the mountains a bit and that I can get my revenge."

Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma):

"It was hard today. I really gave everything. I don’t feel in great shape, and I'm covered in abrasions from head to toe. Step by step, I feel a little better. We will continue to give everything as a team every day, and then we will see how far we can go. I am proud that I gave everything today. That’s all I can do."

Max Walscheid (Qhubeka-Nexthash):

I emptied myself, and went full flat-out. I think I paced it well and tried to not overdo it in the first two climbs and then bring it as fast as possible to the line.

I’m happy with my race, did good values for myself and I’m confident about my legs.

Wilco Kelderman (Bora-hansgrohe):

"Of course, I am disappointed today. After the strong TT in Dauphiné I thought I could be ranked higher today. We had to adapt my TT position slightly because of the wound on my elbow, but, unfortunately, that certainly didn't help since I also felt I was sitting a little twisted on the bike. Anyway, it is what it is, and I am not looking for excuses. My power output was ok, and we have to analyse where I lost time. But, I am still optimistic because I know the shape is there. Our focus will now immediately switch to the first mountain stages this weekend."

Emanuel Buchman (Bora-hansgrohe):

"It was quite a good time trial, a solid performance in a parcours that didn't suit me as you had to push with a lot of power in the uphill ramps in order to carry speed in the downhill part. It was a bit tricky as well to find a rhythm and, on top of that, I didn't want to take any risk at all."
