The eighth stage of the Tour de France was the first encounter with the mountains, and also the first of two days in the Alps in this edition of the race.

The stage was the first test of the General Classification riders on the mountains, and in it Tadej Pogacar displayed his power by leaving everybody else behind, taking the Yellow Jersey and becoming the youngest rider to have the overall lead in two consecutive stages of the race. He and Dylan Teuns -winner of the stage- celebrated after a rainy day.

Here are the reactions of some of the important riders of the day:

Wout Poels (Bahrain Victorious, leader of the KOM classification):

"It seemed like a stage tailor-made for me, and I wanted to play my chances. The goal today was for me to take as many KOM points as possible, and maybe even the jersey. We also thought of maybe getting the stage win - luckily, Dylan did it. All in all, it was an amazing day. We can be really happy about it. Today, I feel like I attacked on almost every climb. I think it probably was a beautiful show to watch on TV. The KOM is going to be a goal for me over the next few weeks. We are going to take it day by day, although we will of course make some calculations."

Mark Cavendish (Deceuninck-Quick-Step, leader of the Points Classification):

"We knew it was going to be a tough stage from the beginning. We thought we would all get back together after the first climb, and we didn’t. We were a bit surprised because we didn’t know what was happening at the front. Michael Morkov and Tim Declercq were looking after me, and we were part of a big grupetto with riders from many different teams. To be honest, I wasn’t worried about the time limit: we had time references and, on the last climb, we paced ourselves to reach the finish line inside it."

Wilco Kelderman (Bora-hansgrohe, 7th position in GC):

"It was a fast day in the saddle, right from the start, and it took a long time before a break was formed. I felt good all day and stayed in the group of the favourites. Poga?ar was unbelievably strong, but my legs were good and went behind him in the group."

Geraint Thomas (Ineos-Grenadiers):

"The crash has taken a lot more out of me than I thought. You always get through some days and talk yourself into it, you’ll get better, but yeah it was a super hard stage, a hard start, I was on the back foot straight away and that was it. It was a wet day, hard roads, I had no chance to come back. After a lot of hard work since January, to finish 33 minutes down, it’s not really what I wanted. It’s tough on the head as much as anything else. There have been a lot of sacrifices to get here. I got through it anyway, and tomorrow is another day."
