Nils Politt (Bora-hansgrohe) has taken a solo victory in the twelfth stage of the Tour de France, Tadej Pogacar keeps the lead of the General Classification.

The twelfth stage of the French grand tour was 159.4 kilometres long and took the riders between Saint-Paul-Trois-Chateaux and Nimes over a rolling course. The day started with the news of the withdrawal of Peter Sagan and just after the real start of the stage, the peloton broke due to the wind.

Taking advantage of the chaos of the echelons a group broke away and included riders like Nils Politt, Stefan Küng, Imanol Ervito, Julian Alaphilippe, Edvald Boasson Hagen, Harry Sweeny and Edward Theuns, among others. While this pack rode away, the peloton got back together and wasn't too bothered about letting the escapees create a big gap.

There were several moves in the front, but with around 40 kilometres to go, Küng attacked and was followed by Erviti, Sweeny and Politt, leaving all the others behind and reaching a gap of more than 14 minutes with the main pack. At around 14 kilometres from the end and in one climb, Küng was dropped and right after Politt attacked, going away by himself.

The German -who has finished second in Paris-Roubaix and two stages of Paris-Nice- crossed the finish line on his own, taking his first win in a Grand Tour. The pack crossed the finish line almost 16 minutes after the winner of the stage and Tadej Pogacar remains on top of the General Classification.
