Simon Geschke (Cofidis, Germany) has tested positive of Covid-19 on the eve of Tokyo 2020 road race and his roommate Emanuel Buchmann will have to maintain isolation after the end of the competition.

The night before the competition, the German rider tested positive for Covid-19 and as a consequence he was couldn't take part on the race. "I feel good physically, but emotionally it is a very black day for me," said the rider to German broadcaster ZDF. "Now all I can do is wish the boys a very good race."

"Coronavirus sounds bad, but my PCR test is only slightly positive. The value is so low that not every test would have picked it up. So far I don't have any symptoms and thanks to the vaccine I only got a very low viral load."

Geschke is now isolated and was taken away from the team's hotel on Mount Fuji, to another one near the Olympic village, where he will have to stay for ten days. But he expects that he's allowed to travel before. The rider's roommate, Buchmann was allowed to start on the race after a negative PCR test, but he will be picked up right after, and will start his isolation.

The rest of the German team also tested negative, but they will have to stay away from the common areas and in their own rooms after the competition.
