Edward Planckaert (Alpecin-Fenix) has taken the first victory in the 2021 Vuelta a Burgos.

The first stage of the Spanish race was 161 kilometres long with a start and finish in the capital of Burgos. The first escape of the day included six riders and featured names like Mario Aparicio (Burgos-BH), Florian Maitre (Total Energies) and Joan Bou (Euskaltel-Euskadi).

This breakaway was caught close to Castrillo de Murcia and soon after a group of ten -with riders like Pavel Sivakov, Jonathan Narvaez, Rodrigo Contreras and Matteo Trentin- took the lead. There was a crash with around 20 kilometres to go that affected riders like Adam Yates, Egan Bernal, Daniel Felipe Martines and Sacha Modolo, but all of them could finish the stage.

Just before the last climb of the day the peloton got together and although Movistar's Gonzalo Serrano was the first to attack, he was overtaken by Planckaert on the last metres of the day. Vincenzo Albanese was the third on the classification of the day.
