The fourth stage of the Vuelta a España has finished with an emotional victory of Fabio Jakobsen and Rein Taaramäe keeping the Red jersey despite some scary moments in the last kilometre.

On a day that Jakobsen took his first grand tour victory after the Tour of Pologne crash that put his life and career in risk and Taaramäe crashed with 2 kilometres to go -without serious consequences- Egan Bernal maintained the White jersey, Arnaud Demare finish second after a strong sprint, Angel Madrazon got the combativity awar and Jordi Meeus finished in the seventh place.

Here are some quotes from the finish line.

Egan Bernal (Ineos-Grenadiers, leader Young rider classification):

"I am very happy. I was sprinting at full speed to not get dropped when I heard that Jakobsen had won, and I think it's very good because he is an example of not giving up. Chapeau. The whole squad has great respect for him for what he has done. In the last kilometres, the wind came from the side and although it was not strong enough to break the group, it went fast. We hadn't planned on trying anything, but we were warned that we had to be vigilant and well positioned. I think that the time that Yates and Carapaz have lost is not very much because it is La Vuelta, we are at the end of the season, and anything can happen, the route is quite hard, and it is very hot, which causes me fatigue."

Arnaud Demare (Groupama-FDJ):

"We knew that this finish slightly uphill could suit me, and that I am capable of doing well on this kind of final. We managed it well. We had decided to take control, and we did. In the last sprint, we waited too much. We knew we had to start the downhill in the front. There were quite a few turns, and we knew it would be very fast. I was in a good position and the guys did a great job. We launched the sprint like we wanted to. I started my sprint strong, and I could see myself winning. I couldn’t see anyone behind, and then Jakobsen came very fast from the back. He was just stronger this time, so I don’t have too many regrets. We controlled well all day, the guys protected us from the wind to keep the train as fresh as possible. Everyone did a good job. Today, we also communicated much better, especially with the trajectories and to make sure that everyone was on the wheel. We knew what we wanted to do and we managed to execute it."

Angel Madrazo (Burgos-BH):

"Today at the start I talked to [Carlos] Canal about escaping together, and only Joan Bou joined us, although I thought that other teams would be motivated, and we would form a breakaway of seven or eight, but in the end, it was only three of us. From the start of the breakaway until the end, we agreed to go as far as possible and to not attack each other at any point. The three of is rode well, but the peloton didn't give us more than four minutes, and that's why we couldn't get far. But even like this, I'm happy that this is the third day that we are in the escape and for receiving once again the combativity award."

Jordi Meeus (Bora-hansgrohe):

"It was a pretty easy start, with the breakaway group distancing itself from the peloton pretty quickly. The race became slightly nervous at 50 to 30 km before the finish because there were some crosswinds. In the end, however, nothing significant happened. Everyone then waited for the sprint preparations and the last 25 km went quite fast. In the sprint itself, we got a bit lost in the lead-out. The guys worked well together, but ultimately we didn't manage to pull it off as we had planned. And I lacked the necessary punch in the end to fight for the win. I'm not super happy with seventh place, but it's still a good start."
