Team DSM's Romain Bardet has taken his first win in the Vuelta a España of his career, at the 14th stage of the race. Odd Christian Eiking has kept the lead of the General Classification.

The 14th stage of the Spanish grand tour was 165.7 kilometres long, with a start in Don Benito and a finish in the Pico Villuercas -that received the race for the first time ever. A group of 18 riders escaped early on the day and included riders like Romain Bardet, Tom Pidcock, Sep Vanmarcke, Jesus Herrada, Nicolas Prodhomme, Jay Vine and Clement Champoussin.

The front group stayed together after the first hard climb of the day and with a bit more than 20 kilometres to go, Prodhomme made a move and soon Andrey Zeits and Bardet got to him. But the adventure of the trio didn't last long, as the Frenchman attacked on one of the hardest stretched of the last climb of the day.

This attack was enough for him to cross the finish line by himself, 44 seconds ahead of Herrada and Vine and one minute and 12 seconds ahead of Pidcock. The peloton rode together for all of the stage and the only rider that made a move was Miguel Ángel López (Movistar) on the last kilometres to try to gain some time, but he only managed to get four seconds.

This inactivity in the group of the favourites meant that Eiking could remain on top of the overall classification and can wear the red jersey for another day.
