Italy has taken the victory in the Mixed Team Relay event of the European Championships of Trentino 2021.

The elite events of the European championships have kicked off with the Mixed Team Relay. In this competition, a team of six riders -three men and three women- had to face the time trial course in two turns, to complete a total distance of 44.8 kilometres.

Italy, the Netherlands -champions of 2019, and Germany -champions of 2020, were the three favourites of the day. In the end, the team formed by Filippo Ganna, Matteo Sobrero, Alessandro De Marchi, Marta Cavalli, Elena Cecchini and Elisa Longo Borghini beat Germany (Miguel Heidemann, Max Walscheid, Justin Wolf, Mieke Kröger, Corinna Lechner, Tanja Erath) by 21 seconds, and the Netherlands (Koen Bouwman, Bauke Mollema, Jos van Emden, Amy Pieters, Floortje Mackaij, Demi Vollering) by 26.

"For me, this is a very sweet return to the blue jersey after everything that has happened to me," said De Marchi. "I think I gave my contribution and in such a stimulating group you feel you can make it even more. I admit I suffered a bit from the start speed, but that was the race plan."

"We are happy to have won this jersey and to have won it on these roads is an added satisfaction," commented Cecchini. "Everyone has done their thing: A great team for a great result," added Ganna. "Wearing the European Champion's jersey is a real thrill."
