Ineos-Grenadiers' Ethan Hayter has taken the win of the fifth stage at the Tour of Britain, which allowed him to climb back to the top of the General Classification.

The fifth day of competition in the British race was 152.2 kilometres long between Alderley Park and Warrington over a route that included two climbs of the third category and one of the second within the first 77 kilometres into the stage. Wout van Aert kicked off the stage as the leader in the General Classification, having an advantage of only two seconds over Hayter.

The escape of the day included riders like Dan Bigham (Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling), Christopher Blevins (TRINITY Racing), and Nickolas Zukowsky (Rally Cycling) and the last of them was caught with 1.8 kilometres to go. Ineos-Grenadiers controlled the front of the pack during the last stretch of the stage and Michal Kwiatkowski launched Hayter for the final sprint, in which he crossed the finish line just ahead of Giacomo Nizzolo and Daniel Mclay, taking also bonus seconds to overtake Van Aert in GC.

The Briton now sits in the first position at eight seconds from the Belgian of Jumbo-Visma, at 19 from Julian Alaphilippe and at 29 from Mikkel Honoré. The next day will be another rolling stage, in which Hayter might face the tactics of his main rivals to take the Blue jersey away from him.
